Follow the ways of your heart -Ecclesiastes 11:9

On Wednesday, I taught my first CCD class. This year I decided to volunteer to help with the Confirmation class and I am very happy with my decision. Yesterday was a little overwhelming though. What I had planned did not take the 20 minutes it was supposed to and I was not prepared for more! How embarrassing! So, I began to talk about my experience with picking a Confirmation name and sponsor. It has been years since I’ve thought about my own Confirmation, so I figured why not write about it!

In the St. Henry Cluster, we make our Confirmation in the 10th grade. I remember really having no clue what it meant to be confirmed. We had to attend all of our religion classes, a retreat and spend time with our sponsor. I put thought into my sponsor but not really into my name. I chose my Aunt Julie as my sponsor. She has been such a wonderful person to have in my life, she is always so encouraging, faithful and just so much fun to be around. Julie has brought so much joy & encouragement to my life, how could I not have chosen her! I chose Veronica as my confirmation name and that was that. I wanted a Saint that wasn’t well known, or one that people didn’t think about off the top of their head…..so I went with Veronica, all I knew about her was that she wiped the face of Jesus.

Saint Veronica is not mentioned in the bible, but everyone knows her from the sixth station of the cross “Veronica wipes the Face of Jesus.” Veronica wiped his face while he was walking to Calvary, she wiped away the blood and sweat that had accumulated during his walk. After doing so, Veronica was left with the image of Jesus’s face on the cloth. According to Catholic Online, there is no history of when Veronica was born or when she passed away, she has literally only been known for wiping the face of Jesus. The cloth is said to be around still and kept in the Vatican. Saint Veronica is the patron saint of photography and her feast day is July 12th.  I honestly have no idea why God led me to this name. I like pictures and taking them, but I am by no means a photographer, maybe that’s something new I should take up? Who knows! I’ve decided that these next few months while I pray for those being confirmed, I will be finding more out about St. Veronica. I don’t always understand what God does in my life or why, but I would like to start learning more about St. Veronica. What better time to start than now?
